| This
arm of the union enables the member to purchase basic goods
and commodities on credit to provide for the family’s
household needs. The Slop Chest
or mini-mart allows the purchase of competitively priced basic
commodities including appliances, on an interest-free, deferred-payment
basis. This is done via check-off authorization
or salary deduction on the member’s succeeding allotments,
subject to a credit limit, through the cooperation of manning
agents.
The Slop Chest started operating in 1983 and moved to the
ground floor of the Training Center building in 1989.
On an annual basis, gross purchases of members and their dependents
from the Slop Chest have averaged at least 18 Million Pesos
in the past five years or about 1.5 Million Pesos on a monthly
basis.
AMOSUP shoulders the cost of
money, aside from the collection risks, as all purchases are
on a deferred payment basis. This benefit
scheme is highly appreciated because members’ dependents
are able to purchase household needs while their spouses are
on board.
As of year 2003, the monthly
sales of the Slop Chest amounts to PhP 2 Million, benefiting
over 20,000 members who avail of the benefit scheme on an
annual basis.
