| The
Sailor’s Home addresses the board and lodging needs
of transient member seafarers who are due to depart or have
completed contracts abroad and whose residences are outside
of Metro Manila. The union provides for the free use of the
facility to all members in good standing.
The Sailor’s Home is a
330-bed dormitory now with first-class facilities catering
to embarking and disembarking members. Bed and breakfast are
free to all members. This benefit scheme provided by the union
started in 1972.
Since
then, the Sailor’s Home has moved to three locations.
In 1994, because of growing demand, a new building was completed
solely for dormitory use.
In 2003, still because of growing
demand, the union completed construction and inaugurated another
Sailor’s Home in Cebu, located in the compound of the
existing Seamen’s Hospital in Madaue City. The building
also houses a small Slop Chest.
The Sailor’s Home in Manila is right across the Seamen’s
Center. It has separate quarters for officers and ratings
as well as for female seafarers. Members
may use the facility for a continuous period of fifteen (15)
days and may be extended for the same number of days.
The dormitory has a spacious lounging area, an audio-visual
room and a game/multi-purpose hall. |
